Since 1976, Ackley Machine Corporation has been supplying single and multi-lane rotogravure imprinting systems for the Pharmaceutical and Confectionery industries from their Moorestown, NJ engineering and manufacturing facility.
Systems supplied by Ackley Machine Corporation are known throughout the industry as “precision positioning” systems, therefore Ackley was offered the opportunity to provide a customer with a positioning system for laser drilling tablets. The customer had researched the single lane systems for laser drilling that were readily available in the marketplace, and were not satisfied. In addition, they wanted to explore the possibility of a camera system to verify the presence of the laser drilled aperture.
The system supplied by Ackley Machine Corporation was based on the patented adjustable angle ramp printer. For this application, the base assembly of the machine was extended 12” to allow additional time for the custom-designed, internal ejection/rejection system. The carrier bars were machined 6-pockets across with a vacuum system holding the tablets, ensuring exact registration of the drilled aperture. The system also included 2 high-resolution cameras to verify the presence and location of the drilled aperture.
As a result of this application, Ackley Machine Corporation is now positioned to supply a vision inspection of a customer’s printed logo on Ackley’s multi-lane printing systems. Generally, these systems are 16 rows across and utilize 4 high-resolution cameras. As with the laser drilling system, these systems also feature single tablet rejection.
